This is the second part of my blog post in which I give people a little insight into the "Behind the Scenes" of bringing Virtualization EcoShell to life.  Why did I do it, Why did I choose PowerGUI, etc.  My goal is to give people just a little appreciation into the amount of effort it takes to bring new ideas to market (and to do it for free!).

As many people have hopefully noticed, yesterday marked the release of Virtualization EcoShell from Vizioncore.  Virtualization EcoShell is a freeware desktop toolkit for VMware administrators based off Windows PowerShell technology.  When get out to customer sites or am at trade shows I am often asked “Where did this idea come from?”, or “Wow, what into getting this available?”  For this blog series, I figured I’d give everyone some insight into what went into taking Virtualization EcoShell from conception to delivery.  The trick will be doing so in a way that doesn’t put everyone to sleep.  I’ve decided to split this post into two parts that I will release over two days.  In exchange for making you guys come back both days, I’ll post another chapter a week early right after I post Part 2 tomorrow.

April 15th is often a sad day, at least in America.  It is the day we have to finally stop delaying and actually pay the US Government the money we owe them from the previous year.  This year, I'm hoping to make April 15th a little bit better for everyone by announcing the public availability of a new freeware product Virtualization EcoShell™.  I'm not talking "Free for 30 days and then we're going to rip 80% of the features away".  I'm not talking "Free....for only a few ESX Servers".  I'm talking 100% completely free of charge regardless of the size of your environment.  How's that for an April 15th surprise?

While at the VMworld 2009 show, I unveiled my newest project, "The Virtualization EcoShell Initiative", or theVESI for short.  The guys over at VMGuru.nl (No relation) were able to capture a bootleg video of my 10 minute product pitch and demonstration.  The audio quality is a little rough due to the amount of ambient noise at the show, but there are no surprise screams into the camera mic if you want to crank up your speakers a little.

I've been talking for some time about some new and exciting things that I have been working on over the last few months, and am proud to finally be able to announce my project to everyone.  The official press release doesn't hit the newswire until tonight, but I figure that since I'm in charge, I can generate a little noise before it goes official.

I'm gearing up for what is shaping up to be 3 solid weeks worth of travel.  The rest of this week I will be in Biloxi, Mississippi on my annual golf outing with a group of 20 guys.  We are doing 6 rounds of golf in 3 days, which is normally pretty rough.  The day after I return from Biloxi I have a quick turnaround as I head to St. Petersburg, Russia (hopefully returning with a VESI beta) and Stockholm, Sweden (Swedish Virtualization Forum).  Since I will be out of commission for some time Jason Boche has decided I should release two more chapters.  Please enjoy Chapter 4 from both books 1 and 2 of the VMware VI3: Advanced Technical Design Guide.

I was able to organize a roundtable discussion with some of the top people in the virtualization community that have adopted and are extending PowerShell based virtualization management.  We had members of the VMware VITK and Quest PowerGUI teams along with key community members Eric Sloof, Alan Renouf, Luc Deekens, Stu Radnidge, and Hugo Peeters.  Eric Sloof (who has a camcorder for a right hand) was able to record the introductions of the participants and was able to capture the ambience of our 3 hour conversation.

Since I won't be able to find the time to release two new chapters next week while in Cannes for VMworld Europe, I've decided to sneak out two more free chapters today.  Chapter 3 from both books 1 and 2 are now available with the rest of the book downloads.
