Zoning LUNs Across Clusters PDF Print

I was recently asked a question by a reader that made me realize some further explanation was required. The question as posted to me was the following:

Why should a zoned lun not be shared between clusters? I tried to find an official stance from VMWare on the communities section and the only information I could find was that you could share a lun between clusters or more accurately between all ESX host in multiple clusters. I would rather not share the luns between clusters, but a team member seems to be bent on doing it. What reasons personal, political, or technical led to the statement in the book about not having luns cross environmets?

After reviewing a comment on my previous post from Erik Bussink I decided to better test my iSCSI solution as I wasn't overly satisfied with what I was seeing.  I ran a few rounds of one of my favorite basic I/O write tests #dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/test.log bs=1024k count=1000.  This command showed my that my throughput absolutely sucked on this relatively beefy system.  I was pushing only about 15-17 MB/Sec on a controller and drives that should be able to perform significantly better than that.

I was able to finally build my iSCSI server a while back and wanted to highlight some of the details of this particular system. I wanted to try to do something unique with this configuration that would help to support a higher-end workload than a typical server.

I have resurrected this old article from the previos VMguru website that was writty by Jason Mattox from Vizioncore. I will also be reformatting and republishing other previously written artciles tonight and throughout the weekend. Jason has provided the following information for people looking to use some of the low-cost storage alternatives available in VI3. This particular setup uses a Windows machine and Windows Services for UNIX to create an NFS share that can be mounted to an ESX host for Virtual Machine, Template or ISO storage.
