It's no secret that I get to travel to Europe a lot for my job, and truth be told, I quite enjoy it. One country that has continuously eluded me has been Germany. In fact, the only reason I have ever been there is to connect through either Frankfurt (an airport I absolutely despise) or Munich to get to Italy. Well, not only will I finally get my chance this summer, but I will also get a second chance in the fall. Combine that with another trip to London in October and I'm all of a sudden moving up to Platinum status on American Airlines in 3 quick trips.
My first trip to Germany will be a pretty complete and thorough trip of the entire region. I will be in Cologne August 9-12. On the 11th and 12th I am doing internal training for Quest's EMEA1 region around our complete virtualization portfolio and how to properly identify and engage in opportunities as they arise. The 9th and the 10th are for my wife and I to enjoy Germany (and the beer, which I think I am most excited for). I've gotten caught in the middle of the "Germany vs. Belgium" when it comes to beer, so will finally be able to weigh in on my own. On the 12th I take a train up to Amsterdam and meet with a few customers. I don't really know which ones yet, nor do I care. Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world and I finally get to share the experience with my wife, albeit in a consolidated timeframe. On the morning of the 13th I fly down to Munich and am back in Dusseldorf that evening to catch my flight back to Chicago on the 14th.
Naturally, I'll be attending VMworld through Quest Software/Vizioncore/Provision Networks/whoever else we manage to buy between now and then. We will do book signings and giveaways and all the other fun stuff that help make my company look good while keeping me in the spotlight as a main attraction. Kind of like a caged lion, only they get to work a lot less and get steak every night. On the last day of the Vegas show, I get a night at home with my wife before I head back to Germany for the second time. This time, it's half work, and all Oktoberfest. I arrive on September 20th and will be staying a whopping 9 days in Fuerstenfeldbruck doing a few private events and customer meetings. After that, I fully anticipate enjoying all that is Oktoberfest.
After some well needed recovery at home I will be heading out to the London area for an entire week to attend the Virtualizaiton Congress show. This event will be a very open and platform agnostic event that will be a welcomed change from the "Cram the sales and marketing down your throat until you gag, then cram some more" circus that VMworld 2008 in Vegas will be. This will keep my in London from October 11 -17. One of these days, I will finally get around to posting my video up there. Of course, that would be in my free time.
